27.01.2020 - Young performers wanted!

Action Zoo Humain is looking for young performers for Flemish Masters, directed by Chokri Ben Chikha. This new dance theatre performance will be created in collaboration with NTGent, Theater Rotterdam, KASK & Conservatory/University College Ghent and les Ballets C de la B.

In the Arab Emirate Dubai, a group of artists and scientists realises a project on Flemish Masters - ranging from Jan Van Eyck to Vincent Kompany. Their stay brings them to seemingly conclusive insights into the construction of success.

Back on fertile Flemish soil, the researchers decide to test the waters. Their trial subjects are young Flemish Belgians with a migration background who want to make it to the top. Who retreats from the rat race? Who continues believing in the survival of the fittest? How do nature and nurture relate in their competition for success?

The premiere will take place on 3 February 2021 in NTGent Schouwburg (Ghent).

  • You are between 15 and 25 years old.
  • You have relevant experience in performing arts (dancing, acting, circus etc.).

About Action Zoo Humain

Action Zoo Humain is the performance group of theatre-maker/performer/researcher Chokri Ben Chikha and business manager Hanne Boelaert. Along with this artistic and commercial core, the team consists of communications officer/artistic assistant Joline Vermeulen, theatre-maker/actress Marijke Pinoy, theatre-maker/musician/actor Zouzou Ben Chikha, theatre-maker/actress Dahlia Pessemiers-Benamar and theatre-maker/actor Maxime Waladi

Action Zoo Humain examines to what extent theatre can directly affect reality without losing sight of its poetic potential and sense of self-criticism. The company uses the historical concept of the 'zoo humain’ or human zoo as an instrument of (re)search to raise questions about ethnic, religious, nationalistic and economic conflict zones. Action Zoo Humain strives to expose power structures, to reveal inter-cultural issues and to activate the public. In this respect, the company seeks to use contemporary formats to represent the current (complex) cross-cultural social reality.

Since 2018-2019, Action Zoo Humain is ‘artist in residence’ at NTGent, which is currently under the artistic direction of Milo Rau.

About NTGent

As a city theatre, NTGent wants to question, motivate and rouse a diverse audience. It does so by making and presenting high-profile productions and by mobilizing theatre for social debate.

The city theatre NTGent is interested in stands between tradition and utopia. It does not remain on the stage on which it was rehearsed, but it tours internationally. And it brings global issues to the city. NTGent is travelling with its ensemble for research and events: to northern Iraq and Congo, for example. The Ghent city theatre offers a stage to actors and non-professionals of different nationalities and languages. Its mission is to make plays together: with all those involved, with the audience, in a constant interaction with society.

About Theater Rotterdam

Theater Rotterdam stands for groundbreaking, often interdisciplinary theatre that wants to celebrate difference, diversity and multiformity. Not abolishing or harmonizing, but seeing, showing and using. We bring together actors, journalists, dancers, the curious, inventors, storytellers, choreographers and talents to create plays.

Theater Rotterdam was born out of the merger of Ro Theater, Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Productiehuis Rotterdam.

About les ballets C de la B

les ballets C de la B (Ghent-Belgium) was founded by Alain Platel in 1984. Since then it has become a company that enjoys great success at home and abroad. Over the years it has developed into an artistic platform for a variety of choreographers.

The company still keeps to its principle of enabling artists from various disciplines and backgrounds to take part in this dynamic creative process. As a result of its ‘unique mixture of artistic visions’, les ballets C de la B is not easy to classify. It is nevertheless possible to discern something like a house style (popular, anarchic, eclectic, committed), and its motto is ‘this dance belongs to the world and the world belongs to everyone.
